I'll be nice and save you from having to see any pictures of his messy little creation haha.
Unfortunately for us, it's actually quite a natural behaviour for horses .... which makes it so much harder to discourage them! Stallions, in particular, are known to poo near watering sites ... which is why you often see piles of poo near a water source. It is not completely understood why stallions do it but its thought to be a form of communication and ''marking'' important and valuable resources.
Naturally wild horses will defecate near but not in the water. This can become more difficult when the horse is in the confined area of a stable .. so while aiming for the water drinker they can accidentally poop in it! Gross! Not a whole lot you can do to stop this kind of behaviour ... but best to grin and bear it while you're rooting out your rubber gloves :(
Thank you Tack N Tails for your Great Article! So true and funny at the same time; WE'RE STILL LOL! We've had to deal with this annoying and unpleasant problem (and can totally identify) and have found some solutions that horse people may find helpful too: http://www.classic-equine.com/posts/water-options/
