Ride Smart and Strap One On. Everyone's Doing It!

Today marks International Helmet Awareness Day!

Now, personally, I've never gotten on a horse without my helmet on and it's purely down to habit. It's just something I do without even giving it a second thought. I was a pure and utter riding school kid growing up so I think they instilled this good habit into me :) I do have friends who aren't so fond of wearing hats and they're reason being "it makes your head too warm / it messes your hair up / my horse is too quiet and predictable to do anything stupid". Arghh! It's one of my major pet hates!

Helmets for riders is the organisation who are running the International Helmet Awareness Day. It was founded in 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident. She remained in a coma for a month following the accident. She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and is still undergoing rehabilitation. Watching her video about Riders4Helmets really puts things into perspective - she was a woman at the very top of her game and because of one bad decision she is back learning how to talk and look after herself :(

Many helmet brands have become involved in the awareness day and these include Samshield, Troxel, Charles Owen, GPA, Aegis (Devon-Aire), Pegasus, Tipperary, Ovation, IRH, One K and KEP Italia in the USA and Canada. Back home here and in the UK Charles Owen, Champion Hats, Gatehouse and LAS have all signed up. They will be offering discounts and special offers on their helmets to mark this special day.

Now is a better time then ever to buy new hats - there are so many gorgeous types on the market and you can always find something to suit your budget. Pink, diamonte, vented, traditional, wacky ...  there is something for everyone! So no more excuses!

And check her out before the accident (here). What a fantastic rider :)
